How much do vets charge?

According to data from AVMA, pet owners in the U.S. spent $31.4 billion on vet care & product sales in 2020. This includes routine veterinary care, surgical procedures, and sales of pharmaceuticals and other products through veterinary clinics (excluding food and treat sales).

A typical consultation fee for a visit to the vets will cost between $45 and $60. On top of this, you will pay for various treatments for fleas, worms, ticks, etc.

Emergency Vet USA highlight that the cost of vet fees can vary greatly depending on the size of your dog. Below are just a few examples of what you can expect to pay for simple and more complex procedures. The low price is for a small dog and the high price is for a large dog:

  • X-Rays $150 - $250

  • Ultrasound $300 - $600

  • Wound Treatment/Repair $800 - $2,500

  • Emergency Surgery $1,500 - $5,000

The prices quoted are averages based on the type of treatment being offered. Other costs not mentioned would be, medications, follow-up appointments, and other office fees.

For example, a dog that was hit by a car will need multiple follow-up appointments and most likely medication which will increase the overall cost of their bill.

Having pet insurance can help pay for the majority of these treatments depending on the level of cover you have. Check out the different levels of pet insurance cover to find the cover that suits you. Or get a free pet insurance quote now using our online Quick Quote tool.
