Older Drivers Insurance

Brief Overview of Older Drivers Insurance

A higher fatality rate in this age group reflects the fact that older drivers are more easily hurt in an accident than younger drivers, and are more likely to have medical difficulties and die from these injuries.

A recent study in 2020 for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study found that while fatal crash involvement for drivers age 70 and over have increased in recent years, they are lower than its highest in 1997, while the number of drivers in that age group and their annual mileage has increased. One reason could be the advanced safety features of modern-day cars and the relatively healthy lifestyle of older people today.

Licensing Requirements

Some U.S. states limit driving activities for people with specific medical conditions or after a severe accident or violation. Depending on their capability, older drivers may be limited to driving during daylight hours or on non-freeway roads. In most states, restrictions such as these can be placed on anyone’s driver’s license, regardless of their age.

Many states routinely try to determine, assess and regulate older drivers with reducing capabilities who cannot or will not willingly modify their driving practices. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 23 states passed laws that require older drivers to renew their licenses more often than the other residents in the state. And with 19 states requiring more frequent vision tests for older motorists, there are steps being made to reduce fatalities in order drivers.

Older Driver’s Insurance Discounts

Some states, according to the AARP - have a regulation that demands an auto insurance discount for anyone completing an approved driver improvement course. Specific state insurance laws differ and certain states may place additional restrictions on eligibility for auto insurance discounts.
