Comprehensive Insurance

What is Comprehensive Insurance?

We all know that we need to have a minimum level of car insurance coverage - unless you live in Virginia and New Hampshire - where no car insurance is required by law.

So assuming you don’t live in either of these states, what is the comprehensive coverage or comprehensive insurance when we are talking about car insurance?

Comprehensive insurance is coverage that will help you repair your car if it’s damaged in an incident like fire, falling trees, or vandalism. It will also help replace your car if it’s stolen.

Comprehensive insurance is also known as “other than collision” cover as it doesn’t payout if you damage your car in a collision. Collision coverage is a separate level of cover that may be included in your policy so be sure to double-check.

Do I need Comprehensive Insurance?

If you pay for your car upfront and don’t require finance, you can take out the minimum level of coverage for your insurance needs. However, If you are getting a loan and financing or leasing your car, your lender will most likely require you to take out a comprehensive insurance policy.

If you're shopping for a new auto insurance policy or are renewing your current policy, you may want to consider comprehensive insurance coverage as it gives you an extra level of cover for an additional premium.
